1. IRISH TIMES REVIEW - CORINNE WEST AND KELLY JOE PHELPS

Magnetic Skyline Tin Angel Records ****

These recent visitors are substantial artists in their own right, but together, on this extended EP, they create something very special as a calling card for future ventures. Country folk suits the duo’s model and in this instance West’s proud, elegant, yet sensuous voice blends perfectly with Phelps’s more muted but haunted tone; their voices just fit together so easily. Add Phelps’s delicate picking into the mix and give yourself a few listens to hear the real joy of two musicians sharing such an understated space: two voices, two guitars, eight songs, including six by West. Her songs, such as Whiskey Poet, Horseback in My Dreams andRoad to No Compromise are flush with lyrical flair and fevered intensity, while the two covers, Amelia and River’s Fool (by Joe Tomaselli) fit easily into the same groove.
